The Ancient Umbrella

On our farm, there is one tree that, more than any other, seems to carry an ancient wisdom.

The Stone Pine, or Pinus pinea, is often called "the ancient umbrella" — the ancestral hat. Its large, deep green canopy opens like a protective cloak against the rain and scorching sun, offering shelter and a welcoming, cool shade on the hottest days.

This tree is one of the most iconic in our landscape and, much like the holm oaks, its story is interwoven with that of the people who live on this land.

It is a hardy tree, standing strong against time and harsh weather, and its fruits — pine nuts — are a true delicacy of nature.

The Stone Pine is not just a beautiful tree. It is a living example of how nature generously provides all that we need. The wood, the seeds, the aroma... everything has a function, everything has a purpose. And, like a true guardian of our farm, it is a daily reminder that we must care for and respect the trees that, through their grandeur, enrich our planet.

But it’s not only its majestic presence that impresses us. The Stone Pine also plays a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance. With its broad canopy and deep roots, it helps regulate the climate, prevent soil erosion, and provide vital habitat for various animal species.

As the seasons pass, the importance of trees like the Stone Pine has never been clearer. In a world growing ever greyer, with concrete forests rising around us, we must do our part to preserve and value trees. They are not decoration — they are an essential pillar of our survival.
