Lisboa tremeu

Lisbon trembled

Today, Lisbon was shaken by an earthquake which, although of small magnitude, was powerful enough to remind us of the fragility of our existence in the face of nature’s grandeur. The tremor made us pause for a moment and reflect on our insignificance against the relentless forces that govern our planet.

The power of nature is unquestionable. In the writings of various philosophers and scientists, we are reminded that, despite all our technological and scientific advancements, we remain vulnerable to natural forces.

For instance, in The Future of the Earth, Timothy Morton, when discussing the "hyperobjectivity" of environmental issues, suggests that nature does not care about our lives or what we build; it exists independently of our presence, both magnificent and indifferent to our actions.

Saramago, in Cain, explores the relationship between man and the power of God and nature, reflecting on human insignificance in the vast cosmos. Nature does not ask for permission to act, nor is it influenced by our daily concerns.

Today’s earthquake is a clear example of this superior force, reminding us that no matter how much we try to control events, there are forces beyond our comprehension and dominion.

It is essential to acknowledge our vulnerability and the importance of living in harmony with the environment. Nature continues its course, relentless, and we are subject to its laws. We are not the masters of the world, but merely a small part of a greater cycle—one that encompasses us and in which, more often than not, we are mere passengers.

Perhaps it is time to reflect more deeply on our relationship with the planet and, perhaps, our responsibility to care for it. As the French philosopher Michel Serres once said, "Man is not outside nature but within it." Our challenge is not to fight nature but to understand its rhythm and learn to coexist with it in a more respectful and conscious manner.

May this event remind us that, no matter how safe we feel in our homes and our lives, true power lies beyond our control. In the end, we are all part of nature and must learn to live with its grandeur, but above all, with its unpredictability.

Uma enorme verdade. A natureza impõe e o homem dispõe. Desrespeitamos a natureza e hipotecamos as nossas vidas. Afinal, na natureza, nada se perde e nada se cria mas tudo se transforma.
